Feeding Futures | Building School Kitchens and Supporting Communities in Kenya

At Hashtag Big Smile, we believe lasting change doesn’t always start with something big.

Sometimes, it starts with something essential.

Food.

Because for many children around the world, education isn’t just about access to schools—it’s about whether they’re able to learn when they get there.

That’s what led us to support communities in Kenya, focusing on something fundamental: making sure children are fed, supported, and given the foundations they need to succeed.

Working alongside local partners, we helped build school kitchens—safe, reliable spaces where meals can be prepared for students every single day.

It might sound simple.

But the impact is anything but.

For many families, sending children to school comes with difficult trade-offs. When food is scarce, education can take a back seat. But when schools are able to provide meals, everything changes.

Attendance improves.

Concentration increases.

Energy levels rise.

And suddenly, the classroom becomes a place where children can truly engage, learn and grow.

That’s the power of something as simple as a daily meal.

But we didn’t stop there.

To create a more sustainable, long-term solution, we also supported the purchase of cows for the village—helping to provide a consistent, local source of milk and nutrition.

This wasn’t just about feeding children in the short term.

It was about creating a system that could support itself.

By introducing livestock into the community, we helped establish a cycle of nourishment and opportunity. Milk can be used to feed students, support families, and even create small-scale economic activity within the village.

It’s a foundation.

One that strengthens both health and livelihoods.

And that’s where the real impact lies.

At Hashtag Big Smile, our work is always focused on building sustainable communities—not just delivering one-off solutions. Whether it’s education, housing or community development, the goal is always the same: create something that continues to grow long after we’ve stepped back.

This project in Kenya reflects that perfectly.

By combining infrastructure (school kitchens) with sustainability (livestock and local food sources), we’re helping to create an environment where young people have the best possible chance to succeed.

Because when a child is nourished, everything changes.

They can focus.

They can participate.

They can believe in their future.

And when enough children are given that opportunity, something bigger begins to happen.

A stronger generation.

A more resilient community.

A future built on stability, health and education.

We’re incredibly proud to support this initiative in Kenya and to play a part in creating the foundations for the next generation of students.

Because sometimes, the most powerful way to change the future…

Is to start by feeding it.
